Elliott Trent: Visual Effects, 3D Modeling and Cheese

Fine tuning

Getting down into doing more precise explosions now rather than just placed smoke! As you can see they’ve reduced quite a lot just to concentrate more on the explosions themselves! Smoke is still looking a bit too consistant.. But I think the explosions are starting to look a lot more dynamic!

Still working heavily on it!

MMM…

Composite is going realllllly well!

Just thrown in some explosions + smoke that Mike has provided! Explosions were tweaked to look a lot better! Used some nice masking techniques!

Progress is speeding up..

Still lots to do

Making progress on the comp!

Fully getting work actually done now! The buildings that Phil, Mike and I have made our finally making thier way into the composition!

Basically took a few passes from Maya with the buildings having neutral light (so they can be lit in AE) and a blank alpha tga!

And finall, getting them into the composition! they actually do look quite real! even better in person! Really so so happy with this, thought it wouldnt look so good!

Work perfectly with the lighting, here is a snap from the comp!

It’s going to get more and more dense!

Model making

Slowly in the process of making a prototype model for the installation!

I’ve made it specifically so it can be flat packed quickly and put up easily! This is so it doesnt suffer the usual limitations of models, as in not being able to take them places which risks breaking it!

Its come out pretty well, now for a coat of white paint!

Experimenting more with lighting on the massive comp

Playing with the big comp so more, got a massive set of lights going over the buildings now! Parented to the sky..

IT looks really cool if you scrub through..

MAKE IT FULL SCREEN TO GET ANY QUALITY AT ALL!

Change of direction

After spending last night waking up all the time from wierd dreams about this project, I had a small ephiphany.

I’ve been worrying loads about making sure the sky is consistant between each frame.. and build crossovers look good and such, and then it hit me, why not just do it as a wide comp and split after the final render? Makes far more sense and it will be far more consistant!

Very exciting! Here is a little screen shot of my overworked imac.. (it doesnt enjoy resolutions of 11404×1080)

InSPIRING

Funny topic title, right?

Ok so after messing around for a while in Maya I’ve managed to pump out a concept tower.. And some cheeky renders:

Click for larger as per usual

And here is a little uncoloured + ungraded size test.. I think its a little large, Phil agrees! So itl be scaled. again this is un coloured + untouched!!

Developing the sky line

So after tlaking to Phil whilst he is developing the propaganda he explained that tower 42 (the tallest building in the picture) is a little finger in comparison the the fist size screens he is after for the landscape..

After discussing some ideas of how it would be plausable to have such a massive screen, I proposed the idea of spires that hang massive LED screens between them, and Phil added the possible idea of a giant purpose built one as if it were some kind of wall! This got me thikning.. I better start modelling a spire model to hang the screens between! Phil’s base concept was this..

So I got thinking about what sort of spire we’d need to design, I was thinking something very simple but with a sinister edge.. Saruman’s tower from LOTR got me thinking..

After talkoing to Phil we agreed a simple design like this was the best way to go! Now to get to desigining! So much work to do.. linking all the split 1080 panoramas (the skies have to be consistant, and looping! And the motion graphics will cross between the two) will have to wait for today!

World Builder – Bruce Branit

REally awesome video my brother showed me,

A lot of post, and its quite humbling I know i could re create it given the time!
Awesome idea tho!

Lighting

Spent today experimenting with lighting!

And also alpha lumincance maps! MEaning I could run a small shadow like figure over the main landscape withouth going into the sky above it!

Works well, its very subtle but if you watch this, then scrub through after you can really see it working!
